A dog or cat or other pet can be a wonderfully cherished addition to any household, as long as you choose the right pet for you and your family. Don't just purchase a pet onan impulse. That's a mistake that people sometimes make, and then they end up with a pet they don't want or can't take care of. Think of how the pet must feel too, being unloved and uncared for.

Dogs and cats are probably the most common pets for people to have. Some people have goldfish, birds, rabbits, hamsters, mice, gerbils, and even snakes.

If you and your family have decided to adopt a pet into your family, you must first consider what kind of care you can give to a pet. If you live in an apartment and are gone most of the time, for example, a dog would be a poor choice as they need to be taken outside periodically to be walked and do their business. A dog might be a good choice if you live in a rural are and have plenty of room for it to run and play. Some dogs, such as German Shepherds, Rottweilers, and Akitas are wonderful watch dogs and can serve to protect you, your family, and your property. If there are children in the household, you willneed to choose a dog that will be good with your children. It would also be necessary to check your local laws concerning having a dog.

As with any pet, you must decide who will feed, water, and generally take care of the dog if if you decide to get one. Remember too that whatever furry pet you and your family chooses will need to visit the veterinarian on a regular basis for check-ups and vaccine shots, not to mention whenever it may become sick or injured and needs medical attention. Trips to the veterinarian cost money, and you should consider whether you are willing and able to pay for these bills.

An apartment dweller might choose to purchase a bird, fish, gerbil, or other pet that may be confined to a cage. A cat might be a suitable choice too as it can roam freely on its own and can use a litter box when need be. You and your family will have to keep in mind that besides the veterinarian visits, you will need to include the cost of a suitable pet food for your new addition, whatever it may be. Goldfish and birds don't consume much food at one time, so their feeding bill would be considerably less than a larger animal.

After you and your family decide upon what kind of pet to add to your household, don't just buy the first one that you happen upon. Visit several pet stores and spend some time looking over their selections. Also, check newspaper advertisements for the pet that you and your family want to get. Sometimes people get transferred to another state through their jobs and are unable to take a beloved pet with them. THey will not only offer, for example, a healthy, neutered, declawed kiten who has had all of its shots, but they will sometimes give you her bed, toys, food dish and water dish all for free!

In conclusion,be sure that the pet you choose---whatever it may be--seems energetic and healthy before you agree to give it a good home. Once at home, feed it and take care of it and you and your family will enjoy its company as well as be happy with the choice you made!
