BIOGRAPHY

Osamu Dazai, novelist, was born in Kanagi, Japan. His original name was Tsushima Shuji. He was the sixth of eleven children of a wealthy landowner. He was educated at the University of Tokyo where he studied French literature. Dazai attempted suicide several times in his life, and he finally succeeded in 1948 in a double suicide with his lover.

Dazai published his first collection of short stories, BANNEN (THE TWILIGHT YEARS), when he was thirty. One of his best known works is SHAYO (THE SETTING SUN) which was published in 1947.
